I met Umberto Cassina back
in the year 2000, when he invit-
ed me to collaborate with the
renowned family business that
shares his name. Umberto
possesses a rare design culture
and sensitivity. Following
him in the MDF Italia adventure
came about naturally. At the
time, the product design com-
pany was already radically
minimalist, boasting great tech-
nological intelligence and
mastering a true sense of sculp-
tural plasticity. Our most vital
designs came to life buoyed by
this culture, as we expanded
their sensory, emotional and
cultural dimensions.
This journey took shape in
designs like the Flow collection
or the Yale sofa, which earned
us the Compasso d’Oro award.
An impulse that allows us
to carry on our increasingly
demanding quest for essentiali-
ty, competence and quality.
We love to love beautiful things
over time. And we share a pas-
sion for meeting the challenges
of the world with elegance.

We‘ve been working with
MDF Italia for sixteen years, and
right from the start were lucky
enough to design a style icon in
the shape of our bookcase
Random. We view MDF Italia as
one of the few companies
whose elegant, sophisticated
collections convey both
emotional depth and precision.
Time after time, MDF Italia
proves that purism is not
necessarily synonymous with
intellectual coldness. Indeed,
quite the opposite: an intensely
emotional design can be
brought back to its essence,
thus offering people a
“spiritual space“. In our work,
we aim to reveal the heart
of each design, to free it from
the shackles of the dictates
of fashion so as to make its es-
sence visible and aesthetically
tangible. MDF Italia is the ideal
partner for anyone who wishes
to always be topical but never
in fashion, to work with state-of-
the-art technology without
being held hostage by it, to rec-
ognise trends without pursuing
them. For us, MDF Italia repre-
sents a valid defence against
the Biedermeier 2.0, currently
available everywhere, and we
look forward to working togeth-
er for the future of the essence
of furniture on a human scale
and of its cultural history for at
least another sixteen years.

My professional history is
closely linked to my collabora-
tion with MDF Italia. In 2011,
I won the Cristalplant Design
Contest, an international
contest promoted by the com-
pany in search of new ideas
by young designers under the
age of 35. This led to the
Mamba desk/shelf – a product
that resorted to a new material
to create a new type of furnish-
ing for your office at home.
Ten years later, we could say
that in addition to believing in
an unknown youth, the compa-
ny also greatly forestalled the
need to offer new solutions
to people working from home.
