In 1950, the us was marked by the firm
belief in progress and by the economic boom.
With the aim of bringing modern design into
American homes, george nelson designed
a range of everyday objects: lamps, clocks
and other accessories for the home. up until
the 1970s, nelson’s design office designed
many different models including the “Bubble
Lamp” and the “Ball Clock”, which became
design icons in the 1950s.
Akari Light sculptures
Isamu noguchi
The American Japanese artist and
designer Isamu noguchi started creating
the Akari Light sculptures in 1951. He made
a total of 100 models out of shoji paper
by hand, designed as table, floor or ceiling
lamps. The name he chose for the lamps
was “akari”, which in Japanese means
brightness and light, and also includes
the word for lightness.
