Lego plastic bricks are the foundational ma-
terial and prime ideological inspiration for
Andreas Zimmermann’s practice. Taking
from Lego’s “system of play” philosophy,
Zimmermann uses Lego constructions to
analyze the outcome of an applied system
upon distinct motifs. Zimmermann’s result-
ing images are variable reconstructions of
reality. Like plastic Legos, Zimmermann’s
images are devoid of the artist’s hand –
fabricated and redundant. In 1960 Lego’s
wooden toy warehouse was destroyed by

continue wooden toys entirely. The wooden
toys were too labor intensive for the post-
war era of mass production. The uniqueness
of each hand crafted wooden toy was oblit-
erated and homogeneous plastic toys were
created. Zimmermann’s photographs ex-
plore both the aesthetic and philosophical
implications of monotonous manufactured
systems within the workforce.
