took that idea and reinterpreted it as fur-
niture with a streamlined functionality to
support our busy lifestyles.
The Valet is the first item we designed
and we ended up naming the collec-
tion after it. Designed for an entryway in
a home or guestroom, the Valet is first
piece of furniture that you would expe-
rience. We designed features such as a
blackened steel frame that doubles as
a coat rack, a walnut shelf for personal
items, and a saddle leather shoe bag to
transform the entry into an area of re-
prieve where you can transition from the
bustle of the street.
The collection works in both hospital-
ity and residential settings. Additionally,
each piece can be used alone or grouped
together in endless configurations. In a ho-
tel, the pieces provide guests with a sense
of luxury and comfort and allow guests to
arrange their rooms to make them feel a
bit more like home. In a home, the multi-
functional qualities of our furniture allow
people to create a series of seamless
transitions, from entry, to work, to enter-
taining to play.
From a designer’s perspective, how does
Stellar Works stand out as a design com-
pany and manufacturer?
DR: Our studio was familiar with the high
quality of Stellar Works furniture from
specifying their products for our projects,
and we were impressed by their roster
of talented designers, so when Yuichiro
suggested to us that we collaborate on a
collection we were very intrigued. Their
team is enthusiastic and nimble, and we
felt we were on the same page from the
beginning. We both wanted to produce a
furniture collection with refined materials
and unique details that wouldn’t compro-
mise on the quality of design.
How does Stellar Works and its unique
cross-cultural position with Chinese,
Japanese, and French heritage, bring some-
thing new to the hospitality industry?
DR: What makes Stellar Works unique
is that it has the backing and expertise
of a French furniture maker, a dynamic
Japanese CEO, and a highly proficient
factory in Shanghai. They’ve combined
their collective knowledge of furniture-
making to create pieces that merge a high
level of craftsmanship with the technical
expertise of their Shanghai production
team.
Our studio had been toying with the idea
of having a collection manufactured in
China for a while, particularly since a lot
of hospitality furniture is made there.
However, finding the right partner in
China can be a challenge, because you
want to able to communicate directly
with the team actually making the piec-
es. Because Stellar Works focus is more
global, and the product development
team is bilingual, we were able to start
the design process quickly.
