Chantilly
Designed in the late 17th century by André Le Nôtre for
the Grand Condé, Chantilly estate garden is the only
one created by the gardener of Versailles whose axis
passes through the Castle, but for a statue, that one
of Constable Anne de Montmorency. Le Nôtre drew a
great perspective from cleared of honor until the statue
of Constable and that extends beyond the French gar-
den and the Grand Canal up to the forest. (The Grand
Canal de Chantilly (2.5 km far) exceeds that of Versail-
les. This is in fact the Nonette, a small tributary of the
Oise, channeled by Le Nôtre). The parterre in the North
of the castle includes vast stretches of water that refl ect
the sky and underlined by jets of water; of all the gar-
dens of Le Nôtre, Chantilly is undoubtedly that which
comprises the largest expanse of water.
