ECHO / NEW INTERPRETATIONS
T
ell me about Echo. What was your inspiration and
how did the iconic light influence your design?
Echo develops the reflective properties of the archetypal
Dutch chandelier and plays on its forms to create a
completely new contemporary piece. It maintains the
original´s grace and elegance but intrigues with its unusual
configuration and corresponding reflections. The typical
candle lights have been replaced by specially developed
LED tubes with a beautiful warm glow that connect the
chandelier with its mirrored counterpart and propels this
classic design into the contemporary realm.
How did you feel when you saw your finished light?
I was amazed at the spatial quality of the fixture. Echo has
a classical reference but takes its place in a contemporary
context. It embraces centuries of development in human
driven crafts.
What is it about lighting that makes it interesting for
you to design?
It’s one of those basics, like a vase, a chair, a table etc.
Light fixtures are containers of light and diffusers of light.
If architecture is basically managing light, with light fixture
design the central question is how do I choose to generate
light and how will it affect the space and people’s mood.
What role do you believe lighting plays in a space’s
interior design?
It is the essential aspect. It relates to very basic instincts
that arise from the time we were cavemen sitting around
a campfire to keep warm. A space with warm light diffused
indirectly still appeals to the sense of community that arose
in those early times of humanity.
Are there any recent lighting trends you find
interesting or are excited about?
The LED revolution has definitely opened a whole new
era of fixture design. I also notice that artists are more and
more interested in light as a medium.
Can you tell me about your experience working with
Preciosa Lighting?
I love working with Preciosa because the company is
so well-rooted in craftsmanship. It’s the real deal! Not
a marketing company outsourcing the production.
Everything is in-house for maximum quality.
