Vittorio Gregotti, Lodovico Meneghetti and Giotto Stoppino designed the Cavour armchair in 1959. An archetypal curved wood chair, it has been part of the Poltrona Frau collection since the late 80s and is revisited today to make it even more comfortable.
An icon of the Neoliberty movement, the Cavour armchair was designed together with two different models of chair and a games table. A family of furniture with which Gregotti, Meneghetti and Stoppino, known as Architetti Associati at the time, wanted to investigate the aesthetic and functional potential of curved glued laminated timber. The aim was to propose furniture which, contrary to the dominant international style, harked back to more emotive and domestic values. The Cavour armchair was particularly successful in this respect, participating in the 1960 "New designs for Italian furniture" exhibition at the “L’Osservatore delle Arti Industriali” gallery in Milan, and receiving an honourable mention at the 1961 Compasso d’Oro awards.
Always keen to explore the hidden corners of the history of design and shed new light on forgotten classics, Poltrona Frau offers a respectful reinterpretation of the Cavour in terms of its materials, upholstery and construction details.
The curved frame is produced from walnut with Canaletto walnut finish and beechwood with lacquered glossy black finish. The seat is sprung with elastic belts. Padding in polyurethane foam.
Upholstery in Pelle Frau® Soul, Nest or Century leather or Pelle Frau® leather from the Color System. The Cavour armchair comes with a pouf in the same materials as the armchair.
