Ancor prima della Grande Guerra, Renzo Frau ha modo di scoprire
a Londra, nei club più esclusivi, i divani e le poltrone detti
Chesterfi eld. Ne intuisce le potenzialità, inizialmente importa
i modelli originali dalla Gran Bretagna verso la sua Torino, indi
decide di procedere ad alcune sostanziali modifi che e di produrre
autonomamente il pezzo. Nasce così, nel 1912, il Chester di Frau.
Inizialmente poltrona, quindi divano. Comunque caratterizzato
dal macro-capitonné e dal bracciolo a voluta segnato da un
profondo plissé. Allora come oggi realizzato a mano.
Even before the Great War, Renzo Frau had already discovered
the Chesterfi eld sofas and armchairs featured in London’s
most exclusive clubs. He immediately saw the potential and
initially imported original models from Great Britain to Turin.
He then decided to make some major changes and produce the
item himself. It was thus that Frau’s Chester was born in 1912.
First an armchair and later a sofa. Always featuring the macro-
capitonné working and spiral armrest featuring the deep plissé.
Today, just as it was then, hand-crafted.
Poltrona, e divano, con struttura
portante in faggio stagionato.
Il molleggio del sedile è ottenuto
con molle biconiche in acciaio legate
a mano e appoggiate su cinghie di
juta. L’imbottitura del sedile è in
crine gommato, mentre lo schienale
e i braccioli imbottiti sono in crine
vegetale modellato a mano. I cuscini
di seduta sono in piuma d’oca.
La lavorazione capitonné del manto
è eseguita interamente a mano.
Una fi la di chiodini rivestiti in pelle
rifi nisce il retro.
Sofa and armchair with a support
structure in seasoned beech. Seat
springing by means of hand-tied
double cone steel springs resting
on jute belts. Seat padding is in
rubberised horsehair; the backrest and
armrests are padded in hand-shaped
vegetable horsehair. Seat cushions
are goose down-fi lled. The capitonné
of the cover is made entirely by hand.
A row of leather-upholstered nails
further embellishes the back.
