Gio Ponti
Gio Ponti (1891-1979) was
one of the most influential
architects and designers of
the Italian post-war era.
An eclectic and visionary
creative force, Ponti’s early
work, marked by Art Deco
and classical influences,
evolved to embrace
Rationalism and the Modern
Movement. His contributions
spanned from architecture
to the interior design of
private homes, hotels, ocean
liners to ceramics. Ponti
was a prolific designer in a
wide range of fields, from
theatre sets to lamps, chairs,
fabrics, kitchenware. He
also played a key role in
establishing the Compasso
d'Oro, which remains one of
the most prestigious global
design awards today. Among
his many achievements he
designed the iconic Pirelli
skyscraper, one of Milan’s
most prestigious symbols.
