Horizontal islands shape the space without
creating barriers, in a living dimension that is
both fluid and protective, welcoming you in.
Lightweight furnishings, skilfully hand-woven
cords create alternating volumes and voids,
de-materialising objects and allowing the room
to be experienced to the full. Soft seating
components with large cushions invite
informal relationships.
The Solaria seating system, designed by Ludovica + Roberto
Palomba, is a paean to comfort and lightness. The system
consists of two or three-seater sofas, corner and bench end
modules, a tall armchair with or without armrests and two
tables, square and rectangular with one or two tops.
The volumes are generous and wide. The backrest and armrests
define the area with a sense of horizontality and lightness at
the same time, thanks to their 0.5 mm diameter cord covering
and the sofas’ slim cast aluminium foot, lifting the geometries.
The interweaving pattern thickens at the base and top,
creating effects of transparency and plays of light and
shadow. The cord is an ecru-coloured material element that
matches the chalk shade of the stainless steel structure.
At the same time, it evokes the Mediterranean tradition
of wicker and rattan furnishings, used both indoors and
outdoors, as well as the extensive repertoire of nautical cord
products that have transformed outdoor furniture so much
over the last thirty years.
The armchair with its high and steel-framed backrest is also
intended to evoke the cultured interpretation of Scandinavian
design, expressed in its minimal style and lightness.
The armchair, equipped with headrest and seat cushions,
represents the element of verticality in the horizontal rhythm
of Solaria, visually transparent thanks to its interlacing motif.
The weave theme is reflected in the overlapping of the two side
table surfaces made of solid teak wood, with an alternating
design of the staves. For a “duckboard” effect, typically found
in a naval environment.
Solaria draws on the stylistic imprint of Ludovica + Roberto
Palomba for Poltrona Frau, such as the generous volumes of
the Let it Be sofa, and takes up typical elements of indoor
furniture such as the round headrest or the L-shaped
armrests. When the end pieces are upholstered with fabric
instead of woven rope, the collection takes on an aesthetic
closer to indoor sofas. Similarly, the soft “feel” of the
fabrics provides a similar sensation to interior upholstery.
Solaria consists of only three materials - stainless steel,
rope and fabric cushions. In addition to being drainable, the
cushions have properties that ensure long life in the most
extreme outdoor conditions. Everything is separable and
easily disassembled. It is thanks to the simplification of the
components and their assembly, together with the ease with
which they can be combined, that variable linear or island
configurations are created.
