100+10 Years of True Evolution
A story of creativity and friendship
between brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo
Castiglioni and Max Huber. Created in cele-
bration of the centenary of the birth of
Achille Castiglioni (1918-2002), and fifty
years after the death of Pier Giacomo (1913-
1968), Sanluca Limited Edition is the product
of a careful philological and conceptual
journey
intended
to
remember
the
successful partnership between the two
brothers, who were able to design products
with timeless modernity and achieve great
experimental results. Sanluca is the result of
a careful process of reducing the volumes of
the backrest and seat, leaving only the
curves necessary to obtain the best ergo-
nomic support. It comprises of only five
elements, each of which is made individually
and subsequently assembled. An armchair
that, despite its elegant and deco aesthetic,
harbours the industrial logic of the auto-
mobile. It is a form that is pure function. This
modernity worked well with the graphics
created by Max Huber (1919-1992), a Swiss
artist based in Milan to whom we owe the
renewal of the communication language of
important Italian brands, including Borsalino,
Einaudi, La Rinascente and RAI.
The Castiglioni brothers and Huber collabo-
rated on important installations for compa-
nies such as RAI, Telecom and Montecatini,
establishing a close friendship. It is this
human exchange of thought that the Limited
Edition seeks to evoke.
The new fabric upholstery was taken
from the Max Huber archive, thanks to a
cooperative effort involving historian Marco
Romanelli, Poltrona Frau Style & Design
Center, Achille Castiglioni Foundation, and
Studio Arch. Pier Giacomo Castiglioni with
the Max Huber Archive. The work created in
gouache on cardboard in 1968 is entitled
“Geophysical Waves” and is characterised by
the abstraction of the propagation of move-
ment, crystallised here in graphic waves that
make the surface of the chair vibrate. Sanluca
Limited Edition, made in just 100 pieces, 50
in dominant black and 50 in white, is an
emblem of the encounter between creativity,
craftsmanship and technology.
