Quando si inizia un percorso di progetto che vuole creare non solo oggetti ma un’intera idea di ambiente,
non sempre è chiaro l’obiettivo finale: occorre mettere via via a fuoco ciò che all’inizio sembra sfuocato, lavorando con
pazienza sulle forme, le strutture e i materiali. Così il mio percorso con Maxalto inizia idealmente, a metà degli anni 90,
con una visione: un’immaginaria scena teatrale di ambiente borghese, di ispirazione francese, dove nascono i primi
prodotti in cui ho cercato di combinare piacere estetico e funzionale. Per rendere realtà questo scenario sono stati
importanti alcuni punti di riferimento: l’immaginario di progettisti come Jean Michel Frank, che ingentiliscono
le geometrie talvolta costrittive del Modernismo; la dedizione del produttore e dei suoi realizzatori a raggiungere
la massima qualità; il filtro dello sguardo di chi rappresenta questi oggetti nella comunicazione. Dopo tanti anni
di progetto, mi pare si sia infine creato un universo di prodotti tra loro coerenti, fedeli a quell’idea iniziale di ambiente,
che si può oggi considerare anche una scommessa vinta. Non avrei potuto desiderare di meglio
come compimento di questo percorso iniziato 25 anni fa.
When you embark on a design program to create not only objects, but an all-encompassing idea of interiors,
the final goal is not always clear. The trick is to gradually bring into focus what at first seems vague, and this is done by
patiently working on the shapes, structures and materials. My design journey with Maxalto began in the mid-1990s
with a vision: an imaginary theatrical setting for a bourgeois interior of French inspiration, composed of products that
would combine aesthetic pleasure with functional duty. Important reference points helped turn this scenario into
reality – imaginative designers from the past like Jean-Michel Frank, who softened the sometimes constrictive geometry
of modernism; the dedication of the manufacturer and its technicians to obtain the most elevated quality;
and the trained eye of the communication specialists who present these objects to the people. After many years of work,
my impression is that we have created a universe of cohesive products true to the initial concept of building a specific
type of environment, which is to say we have won the wager. I could not have wished for a better fulfilment
of the undertaking we started 25 years ago.
