Vibrazioni oniriche
Dreamlike vibrations
Non avete idea di quante cose si possano capire
dal modo in cui un uomo accavalla le gambe.
O da quello di una donna di appoggiarsi allo schienale.
Qui passano tante persone. Attendono di sorvolare un oceano.
Di attraversare due continenti o un deserto senza fine.
Gli esseri umani sanno stare a diecimila metri come se niente
fosse. Alcuni di loro, in attesa di volare, parlano al
telefono. Altri guardano un film. Altri ancora si abbandonano
al sonno. Nel tempo, ho imparato a riconoscere i loro sogni
dalle vibrazioni oniriche che sprigionano. Vi sono affermati
imprenditori che rivedono un cortile da cui sono passati a
due anni, un’estate. Alcune ragazze si trasformano in sirene
e scompaiono fra le onde.
I bambini capita che cavalchino elefanti, cavalli o tigri.
Un giorno una signora vecchissima si rivide da ragazzina,
mentre si arrampicava su un albero.
Era prima della guerra, e indossava un grembiule giallo
con su un omino che salutava da un piccolo bastimento.
You can really have no idea of all the things you can
learn from the way a man crosses his legs. Or how a woman
leans against a backrest. I see so many people here,
as they wait for their transatlantic flights.
Waiting for flights across not one continent but two,
or some boundless desert. Human beings know how to fly up
to 30,000 feet as if it were the most natural thing on earth.
Some of them chat on the phone. Some watch movies. Others
plunge into sleep. Over time, I’ve learned to read their
dreams from the very faint vibrations that they unleash.
Titans of industry glimpse dreamscapes of a courtyard they
walked through when they were two years old, one long-ago
summer. Young women are transformed into mermaids and vanish
beneath the waves. Children might breathe fast as they ride
on the backs of elephants or horses or tigers.
Once, I recall, a very old woman saw herself again as
a little girl, shinnying up a tree. That had been before
the war, and she wore a yellow pinafore with a tiny
embroidered sailor waving from a little boat.
