How do you go from making
canes for parasols, to creating
the KingSofas gracing the hall
of Station F, the world’s largest
coworking space? It takes five
generations. The story of the
Rosets, a French family, is one
of responsiveness and steadfast
creativity. Antoine Roset was the
founder, the woodworker, father of the legacy. When women in the
late nineteenth century stopped using cane parasols, Antoine and his
son Émile pivoted; first, to produce chair legs and bars, and then whole
chairs. Their small business grew until the late 1930s by extending its
savoir-faire to colonnade chairs, cane chairs, and finally,
leather chairs. In the spirit of postwar reconstruction,
Jean took over the business. He inaugurated the era of
institutional furniture; social organizations, middle schools,
high schools, and colleges were equipped with functional
furniture. Inspired by Scandinavian design, beech was the
main material used but future design iterations led to the
incorporation of mahogany, rosewood, and more modern
materials such as plastic and metal.
In the 1970s, Jean Roset pivoted the business again,
back to a private clientele to present the original designs
of established and up-and-coming designers. Be it
entrepreneurial intuition or a challenge, the business’ success
continued to grow.
Now in 2020, Ligne Roset partners with more than seventy
designers of all backgrounds; from emergent to iconic.
Michel and Pierre Roset have continued to expand their
mission as trailblazers and talent-finders, throughout an
exclusive distribution network.
Today, Roset’s newest business leaders, Olivier and Antoine,
are adapting Ligne Roset to the digital landscape of the
21st century. Like those before them, they are pushing the
boundaries of the business. As beacons of this legacy, they
are guarantors of the singular craftsmanship, technology
and artistry of the world-renowned Ligne Roset company.
«Ose!,» which means “to venture” in French, has always been
their call.
