The first series of Liaigre’s Upcrafted Objects features
four creations offered in ten editions each. Designs
including a vase, tray, bookends and doorstopper,
formed from a question: “How does one transform
the unused scraps produced daily by manufacturing
workshops? What can we do with such trimmings of
leather, remnants of precious stone or wood, fragments
of bronze, whose dimensions restrict their use and
which equally cannot and should not be thrown away?
How can we use these different scraps and avoid
making others?
The Liaigre studio responds to this question through a
proposal of exclusive designs that result from a process
that aims to transform fragments into useful objects
and to highlight their beauty and uniqueness. Since
luxury is also what is “recycled”, the design team has
chosen to approach the subject in collaboration with
French craftsmen, some of whom work regularly with
the Maison, whilst others are targeted for their specific
skills.
This project aims to highlight the extraordinary mastery
of French workshops that combine technique and
creativity. Each object is produced with a concern for
eco-responsibility by making sure to use the most
ecological materials possible, such as vegetable glues.
The same goes for the packaging of these objects which
is custom-made by a French workshop that processes
recycled cardboard and tissue paper to ensure all
materials are being utilized to their potential. The
handles of the packaging are made of leather strips
(leather scraps supplied by Liaigre).
