Tunable
white
lighting
With the advancement in LED technology it is now possible to
define, for general indoor applications, luminaire architectures
comprised of multiple color LED chipsets that can be interlinked
with new digital control strategies to tune the correlated
color temperature of the white light. Through a combination
of light quality, color, and intensity, the system helps create
environments that can be tailored to an occupants’ needs and
preferences at any given time.
What is tunable white lighting?
To really understand the benefit of tunable white,
it is important to appreciate the effect of light on
our biological clock as it influences many aspects
of our physical and emotional well-being. This
biological clock is regulated by light and darkness,
by the daily cycles of night and day and the time we
spend asleep and awake.
In our modern society, we spend much of our
time indoors – at home, in a school, office, store
or hospital. Those who have to stay indoors for
significant parts of their time under static lighting
conditions run the risk of disrupting their biological
rhythms.
