Cores Da Terra is a ceramics studio in Ibirataia, Brazil.
The studio was founded in the fifties by the Brazilian
ceramist Selma Abdon Calheira. The name Cores Da
Terra, meaning Colours of the Earth, reflects a core
value of the studio: sustainability.
Another core value that Selma Calheira carries out, is
social responsibility. At Cores Da Terra, Selma trains
the people of Ibirataia and neighbouring cities as
professional ceramists. In this sense, Cores Da Terra
actively contributes to the local economy, providing jobs
that allow families to live and work in their own cities.
In 1996, Calheira was even awarded the prize ‘Gente
que Faz’, for her work with economically disadvantaged
people in one of the poorest areas in Brazil.
Cores da Terra uses organic resources such as clay and
natural pigments to create sustainable art objects that
spark the imagination.
