FREIFRAU MANUFAkTUR: Ihr wart fast zwei Jahre mit
der Entwicklung von Grace beschäftigt. Was ist so
besonders gewesen?
HOFFMANN kAHlEySS: Die Idee war es, den Entwurf
wie eine über ein Gestell gelegte Husse wirken zu
lassen. In der ersten Entwicklungsphase haben
wir eine steile lernkurve hingelegt und erkennen
müssen, dass wir mit dieser Idee nicht den für
Freifrau so charakteristischen Sitzkomfort erreichen
können. Wir haben dann versucht, alles über leder
zu erfahren, bis wir wussten, an welchen Stell-
schrauben wir drehen mussten. Das hat viel Zeit
gekostet, die sich heute bezahlt macht.
FF: Wie passt euer neuer Entwurf Grace in die
bestehende Freifrau-kollektion?
Hk: Die Stühle bei Freifrau zeichnen sich durch beson-
dere Weichheit und Bequemlichkeit aus. Grace hat
eine für die kollektion neue, klarere Erscheinung,
büßt aber keineswegs an Sitzkomfort ein. Eine für
uns sinnvolle und schöne Erweiterung.
FREIFRAU MANUFAkTUR: It took you almost two years
to develop. What was so different about working on
this design?
HOFFMANN kAHlEySS: The original idea was chair
which looked like a covering had simply been laid
over a frame. What the first design stage quickly
showed us, however, was that we wouldn’t be able
to offer the characteristic Freifrau levels of comfort
with this approach. So we started to research
leather as a material and tried to find out where we
could make adaptations to the design. That took us
a lot of time at the beginning, but it was worth it in
the long run.
FF: How does your new model Grace fit into the overall
Freifrau collection?
Hk: Freifrau chairs are especially soft, particularly com-
fortable. Grace upholds this level of comfort while
offering a new, clearer form than other pieces in
the collection. As such, it’s a logical addition to the
range – and an aesthetically pleasing one.
