In an initial prototype I had chopped off the top at a 45-degree angle, and
I inserted an automotive headlamp. If I look back on that first prototype
today it is somewhat disturbing, but that is absolutely normal, because it
represents the start of a long path of research. You have to work a lot to
achieve a simple product. At the start my sign was too strong, almost
violent. Foscarini did a good job of mediating, and that is only proper,
because that is design. It is the right balance between the parties
involved, to make a shared work, together. Only by working with Foscarini,
where they know how to handle light, how to convey a sensation of
transparency and material warmth, were we able to make the product
reach the right proportions, the right authenticity.
We have been able to obtain an object that is much clearer, cleaner,
where the important thing is the light it produces, the transparency of
the body, the vibration perceptible in the design. It is not an object that
shouts, but a gentle presence that enters homes.”
WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC CHALLENGES IN A PROJECT
INVOLVING LIGHT?
MS — “After this lamp and after this approach to composite
materials, I got back to some extent to the label of the designer who
makes lamps with novel materials. This doesn’t bother me, and in fact it is
what we love doing, together with Foscarini. So today, if in my research I
find something interesting, or something that has not yet been utilized in
the world of lighting, Foscarini is the company with which I can have the
best chance of developing something original and innovative.”
