Foscarini
— Design stories.
In 1992, Orbital – the lamp-sculpture
that disrupted the lighting stereotypes
of the time – became the first step in
the relationship between Foscarini
and Ferruccio Laviani.
It was a wager. There was no guarantee
that a lamp with that appearance would be
a success. Nor was there any certainty that
it would stand up to the test of time
Instead it has done exactly that, and
from that moment on the collaboration
between Foscarini and Laviani has
become ongoing research, in projects
capable of exploring new ways of
producing narratives, styles, atmospheres.
A fertile interchange, based on elective
affinities, extending across three decades
as a pathway of mutual growth.
For us, Orbital was a statement, a
declaration of intent. With Orbital we got
away from Murano blown glass for the
first time, exploring a way of thinking that
has now led to the use of over 20 different
technologies. This implies total freedom
of expression, which we can have because
we are a company without a factory,
without constraints on production, which
leaves lots of room for new ideas.
Together with Ferruccio Laviani and
his lamp-sculptures we have explored
new design pathways, investigating a
great variety of expressive languages:
in product design, but also in the creation
of interiors for trade fairs, showrooms
and installations.
There are many ways to celebrate
a relationship that has continued for
30 years. We have chosen to fan the
flames of creativity. Therefore we asked
an artist-photographer, Gianluca Vassallo,
to interpret the lamps Laviani has
designed for Foscarini from 1992 to the
present, still available in our catalogue.
The result is a narrative that
unfolds in episodes. Fourteen shots in
which the lights inhabit alien spaces:
not locations but signifying settings in
which the distance between the object
and the context multiplies meaning
and stimulates us to seek personal
interpretations around that imaginary
of light that belongs to all of us, but which
each person sees with his or her own eyes,
every single day.
