Foscarini
— Design stories.
There are moments in life in which
you realize you’ve done something that
was not so obvious when it was happening.
For the development of Havana,
we decided for the first time not to
use glass – which until then had been
practically our only material – but plastic,
in response to the design of a project
with a light, youthful and playful spirit,
the result of the creativity of an equally
youthful designer. This was a courageous
choice at the time for Foscarini, so much
so that some of our dealers refused to
work with the item, because in their
view we were a glass company. Shortly
thereafter, they had to change their minds,
when that model began to enter homes
and the collective imagination, becoming
a new lamp archetype.
Havana was a new luminous object:
a lamp at medium height, almost a new
typology, with an impressive, highly
visible diffuser that spread light from
the centre outward. A familiar figure,
a “character” with whom to establish a
personal relationship, easy to insert in
any setting, bringing it character with its
warm light.
Viewed from the present, Havana
has been our “sliding door”, one of
those fundamental turning points that
have contributed to determine what
Foscarini has become today. A company
that always chooses to put design at the
centre, without setting limits and without
compromises, to fully nurture the spirit
of the project as it was interpreted in the
initial proposal of the designer. For this
reason, Foscarini works with all materials
and all technologies, because that is never
the starting point, because we have chosen
to concentrate on the force of ideas.
Thanks again to Jozeph and thanks to
Havana – happy birthday!
