Così per la prima volta il letto, fino ad allora
articolo per negozi specializzati, entra a pieno
diritto in quelli di design.
«Era un’epoca fantastica: si stava affermando
il Postmodern, succedevano cose che al di là
dell’entusiasmo per la novità si capiva che
avrebbero cambiato tutto. Come la tv a colori»,
ricorda ancora Castelli. E Nathalie incarna
anche questo spirito. «Lavoravamo sempre
insieme, era un punto di forza. Anche quando
Messina sceglieva i tessuti o quando io
presentavo le campagne, Magistretti c’era: per
i tessuti, per esempio, portava delle rigature
pazzesche, che solo lui sapeva dove andare a
trovare. Cose che in una camera da letto non si
erano mai viste. Era un clima particolare.
Magistretti non disegnava, faceva schizzi veloci,
abbozzava gesti, sistemava le cose con le mani.
Era il maestro, eravamo tutti in adorazione».
And so, for the first time, the bed moved away
from the traditional specialist retailers and took
its place in the world of design. Castelli continued
«This was an exciting era to be part of: the
Postmodern movement was consolidating; and
apart from the enthusiasm for innovation, things
were happening that were destined to make a
lasting change - Colour TV for example». The bed
Nathalie also epitomised this spirit. «We were
always working together. This was one of the
strong points. Magistretti was there when
Messina selected the fabrics or when I presented
the campaigns. In terms of the fabrics, for
example, he brought crazy stripes to the table
that only he was able to source. This was a design
feature that had never been seen in the bedroom.
There was a strange sort of climate.
Magistretti did not design, he made rapid
sketches, he outlined the gestures, he tweaked
things with his hands. He was the Maestro, and
we were his mesmerized disciples».
