Finally, the development and the
manufacturing of the project also had to
take into consideration the logistic issue.
Transporting and installing such big and
heavy elements would not have been an
easy task, if it was not carefully taken into
consideration from the beginning.
On the overall, “The Wing” is a concentrate
of totally made-in-Italy lighting technology.
The innovative base, which supports a huge
weight of 8500 kg and contains the LEDs,
is completely concealed in the floor.
The floor of the VIP lounge in black Carrara
marble contrasts with the purity of the
crystal lit up by a system of LEDs, which
create a spectacular reflection effect.

SOLUTIONS
The lamp is composed of 20 ultra-clear glass blades standing 3.2 metres
high. According to the design of Foster + Partners, each blade is shaped
differently from the others and it is decorated with engravings which, lit
up by LED sources hidden in the base, produce a breath-taking effect.
The lamp weighs 8500 kg: a huge load for an airport floor with limited
strength and only able to withstand a limited weight. A special base had
to be engineered in order to support the heavy weight of the glasses.
Moreover, the base had to contain the lighting devices, and for this purpose
it had to be easily accessible for regular maintenance. A glass box was built
around it in order to protect the glass blades and to give the impression that
the lamp is a real work of art in a showcase.
