CONCEPT
The purpose of a business class lounge is to host frequent flyers, business
people or demanding tourists during their journeys. It has to be a place
where passengers feel at ease and enjoy their waiting time. In all projects,
Foster + Partners explore innovative solutions and new building concepts.
For this lounge, the architects chose a strong architectural minimalistic
style. The use of very precious materials like white Carrara marble and
crystal glass made the atmosphere very cold, almost impersonal. However,
this feeling contrasts with the elegance of the finishing and of the interiors.
Finally, light was used also as an architectural element. It marks and
enhances some areas. Moreover, thanks to its shadows, it gives shape
to certain elements, like the reception desk.

REQUIREMENTS
Foster + Partners were looking for a glass
screen to place behind the reception desk.
However, not only were they looking for
a glass element, but for a lighting source
as well. Their idea was to make a contrast
between the bright light behind the desk
and everything else.
The guests who walk into the lounge should
have the perception of being blinded by the
wall of light, almost as if they were walking
into the heavens. Indeed, the lounge is
considered by travellers as a safe haven.
