soFtness
“Per me, la ricerca della sofficità è un’avventura.
Prima della gommapiuma e del poliuretano,
i divani erano strutture fisse di legno con un
telaio da disegnare. Mentre il molle non si può
disegnare, si deve modellare. Da qui nasce la
necessità di trovare il linguaggio di un materiale
che ancora non ce l’ha. Io sto continuando a
scoprire il linguaggio del molle. L’ho acquisito
in parte, ma c’è ancora molto da scoprire.
Scoprire un linguaggio significa esprimere in
modo estetico la sua consistenza. L’apparire deve
essere l’essenza del progetto e questa essenza sta
nel processo. Per questo considero fondamentale
portare avanti la ricerca sul Cuscino Intelligente.
Qualcuno mi ha definito come un archeologo che,
scavando nel profondo dei secoli, trova qualcosa
che ci appartiene, quelli che si definiscono gli
archetipi profondi. Quando si parla di divani, per
me l’idea della libertà è un archetipo: libertà del
movimento e libertà della morbidezza”.
“I find the quest for softness is an interesting
adventure. Before foam rubber and polyurethane,
sofas were fixed wooden structures with a frame
that was sketched. You cannot sketch softness:
you have to shape it. Hence the need to find a
language for a material that has no language. I
continue discovering the language of softness.
I have acquired it in part, but there is still a lot
to discover. Discovering this language means
expressing its substance in an aesthetic way.
Appearance must be the essence of the project
and this essence lies in the process. This is the
reason why I consider it fundamental to carry on
the research on the “smart cushion”. Someone
described me as a kind of archaeologist, who
digs deep into past centuries to find something
that belongs to us, something that I call deep
archetypes. For me, when it comes to sofas, the
idea of freedom of movement and softness is an
archetype.”
Francesco Binfaré
È un intellettuale, artista e designer. Nasce e vive a Milano e impara dal padre il disegno e la pittura. Dal 1960 esercita l’arte nell’ambito industriale, assumendo soprattutto
il ruolo di direttore artistico di centri di ricerca e promozione di progetti, e coinvolgendo architetti e designer nella creazione di prodotti destinati a divenire pezzi storici del
design Italiano ed internazionale. Nel 1992, viene chiamato da Massimo Morozzi a progettare per Edra. L’incontro segna l’inizio di una nuova stagione, con l’invenzione di
grandi divani, dalla straordinaria forza espressiva e innovativa. Nel 2022 è stato premiato con il Compasso d’Oro alla carriera.
He is an intellectual, artist and designer. He was born and lived in Milan and learned drawing and painting from his father. Since 1960 he has been practicing art in the industrial
fi eld, mainly assuming the role of artistic director of research centers and project promotion, and involving architects and designers in the creation of products destined to become
historical pieces of Italian and international design. In 1992, Massimo Morozzi called him to design for Edra. The meeting marks the beginning of a new season, with the invention
of important sofas, with extraordinary expressive and innovative strength. In 2022 he was awarded the Compasso d’Oro Career Prize.
