forte, attraverso architetture fi rmate da grandi architetti.
Per sopperire alla mancanza di storia, hanno lavorato su una
visione contemporanea di cantina che, allo stesso tempo, fosse
carica di quei valori e signifi cati che connotavano le cantine
europee. L’obiettivo è collegare la tradizione vitivinicola con
una produzione che è diversa da qualsiasi altra produzione
industriale, ma che introduce il tema dell’artigianato, della terra
e, soprattutto, della capacità creativa ed artistica. La produzione
del vino richiede un approccio di tipo artistico e creativo. Ai tempi
del nostro progetto, in Europa c’erano stati alcuni casi. Io avevo
scritto un libro sulle cantine d’autore: Cantine. Architetture
1990-2005 nel quale avevo raccolto molti esempi di edifi ci di
qualità. In Italia, gli Antinori sono stati tra i primi a capire che una
cantina di nuova concezione deve essere un luogo di produzione,
ma anche di grande sacralità, secondo la nostra cultura, e di
rispetto nei confronti della produzione vitivinicola e della natura.

the lack of a history, they worked on a contemporary view of the
winery that could also be laden with those values and meanings that
European wineries were known for. The aim is to connect the vine-
growing and winemaking tradition with a business that is different
from any other industrial business but that brings in the themes of
craftsmanship, the land and, above all, creative and artistic skills.
Winemaking needs a somewhat artistic and creative approach.
When we came up with our project there had been a few cases in
Europe. I had written a book about designer wineries: Cantine.
Architetture 1990-2005, where I had described many examples
of quality buildings. In Italy, the Antinori family has been one of
the fi rst to understand that a new-generation winery must not
just be a place where wine is made, it must also be a deeply sacred
place, according to our culture, and a place that is respectful of
nature and of the vine-growing and winemaking tradition.
