The neighborhood, also known simply as “The
Village,” has traditionally been a refuge for New
York’s artists and bohemians. Yes: Jack Kerouac
wrote here, Jackson Pollock painted here, and Bob
Dylan sang here. And these iconic artists’ legacy
lives on in the neighborhood. Although there are
few bohemians left, the streets have maintained
the essence of New York life that inspired them.
Today the area’s residents are primarily upper
middle class professionals enamored of its classic
brownstones; nevertheless, its intense nightlife,
especially the jazz scene, is constantly injecting
new life and vitality into the streets of the
