Durante el confinamiento de 2020, Luigi
Spina recorrió con libertad las ruinas de la
ciudad que quedó sepultada por el Vesubio
en el año 79 d. C., incluidos algunos
espacios que habían permanecido cerrados
por motivos de conservación. Así se
construyó Pompeya, un proyecto fotográfico
en el que el artista italiano supera el medio
millar de instantáneas tomadas en más de
cincuenta viviendas de esta ciudad histórica
desde una perspectiva recogida en contadas
ocasiones: decenas de domus vistas desde
el interior en las que cada grieta, mella o
nueva capa de pintura refleja las vicisitudes
del paso del tiempo en los propios edificios.
During the lockdown of 2020 imposed
by the pandemic, the archaeological
photographer Luigi Spina had the chance
to roam the ruins of the polis that was
buried by the Vesuvius in the year 79
AD, including visits to some of the spaces
which remained closed. This is how Inside
Pompeii was put together, a photographic
project with more than five hundred
photographs taken in over fifty dwellings
of this historic city from a perspective that
is rarely documented: dozens of ‘domus’
seen from the inside in which each crack,
dent, and layer of paint reflects the effects
of time on the buildings.

Spina took the lockdown
of the pandemic as an
opportunity to live in
Pompeii, then closed
to the public. He used
natural light to capture
the essence of mosaics and
peristyles of more than
sixty ‘domus’ interiors.
