The history of goldsmithing, which consists of working precious metal, was
transformed by the creation of silver-plated metal, introduced in France by
Charles Christofle, who founded the eponymous company in 1830.
In 1842, he acquired the patents that would allow him to practice
electrolytic gilding and silvering on an industrial scale. From that point
on, Christofle has been producing silver-plated goldsmithing that equals
the beauty and splendor of 18th-century sterling silverware.
To adapt to new lifestyles, Christofle introduced two models of stainless-
steel flatware in 1971, thus incorporating a new material into its
collections.
