Eric Blum è un pittore americano nato nel 1956 a Fresno,
in California. È cresciuto a Los Angeles e attualmente vive
e lavora a New York. Ha studiato fotografia alla UCLA e ha
intrapreso una carriera fotografica per gran parte dei suoi
vent’anni.
I dipinti di Blum utilizzano strati trasparenti di seta lavata
con inchiostro, impregnati di cera d’api, in un patchwork di
forme che sono al tempo stesso sia sfumate e dai bordi
netti. Tendono ad essere né completamente leggibili né
genuinamente astratti, ispirati dalla qualità sfuggente delle
visioni periferiche che sono quasi sempre qualcosa di
diverso dalla loro realtà effettiva.
Ha esposto, tra gli altri, al Contemporary Art Center di
Cincinnati, al Kresge Art Museum, al Knoxville Art Museum,
al Montclair Art Museum e alla Albright-Knox Gallery. Ha
ricevuto per due volte il Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award
e nel 2008 il premio della New York Foundation for the Arts.
Eric Blum is an American painter born (1956) in Fresno,
CA, grew up in Los Angeles and is currently based in New
York City. He studied photography at UCLA and pursued a
photographic career throughout his twenties.
Blum’s paintings employ transparent layers of ink-washed
silk, infused with beeswax in a patchwork of forms that
are both gradient and sharp-edged. They tend to be
neither entirely legible nor genuinely abstract, inspired by
the elusive quality of peripheral glimpses that are almost
always something other than their actuality.
Exhibitions include: The Contemporary Art Center
Cincinnati, Kresge Art Museum, Knoxville Art Museum,
Montclair Art Museum, and The Albright-Knox Gallery.
He is a two-time recipient of the Pollock-Krasner
Foundation Award as well as a 2008 recipient of the New
York Foundation for the Arts award.
