For Franco Fossi, the Mona Lisa represents
a sign medium to be decoded, an effigy and a
stylistic imprint from which planning in progress
still springs: an expressive code from which to
generate Art, through special extraction processes.
As a miner Fossi has insinuated himself beyond
the Leonardesque nuances to abstract primordial
elements and from there liberate his own sensibility,
overcoming the limits of space and time, to operate
the New while still remaining tied to a creative
myth and trying to figure out the initial spark, the
first sign, the original idea with which the great
aesthetic imagination gave life to the work. It is
with this investigative impulse that Fossi chose the
Mona Lisa as its operative matrix, since myths and
theories gravitate around her, capable of uniting
concrete science and imaginative abstractions, all
united in the image of the most famous portrait in
history. This is why Visual DNA stands in the balance
between certainty and becoming, between sensible
perception and inventiveness: it is the trademark
of the Genius, of the apex of aesthetic creation
that can only touch the Sublime and bring it back
to consciousness through Art, since it is nothing
but the original form of Uniqueness that the artist
scientifically seeks with the precision of a surgical
scalpel. Fossi employs an innovative methodology
that deconstructs, before any theory, the valence
and sign of the work of art par excellence,
paraphrasing the meta-Art that is hidden behind
the Monnalisian myth and that can be applied to
any other “daughter” of the creative genius, since
being composed of elements of recognisability,
the metamorphosis and morphogenesis of the
Visual DNA in turn creates other expressive and
generative codes and, consequently, other works of
art. Fossi’s merit was that he understood that art
can not only be the fruit of fantasy or the mimesis
of reality, but that it originates from an archetypal
substrate that the present cannot understand
if not investigated with the right means and the
artist offers a starting prototype which, in the
course of his production, makes us understand
how important individual evolution is to creatively
realise the personal way of making art, originating
from a common denominator: the essence of the
divergent spirit, the Visual DNA, the spark before
any form of artistic expression.
