A CULTURAL NETWORK IN OUR DNA
The Union of Municipalities has carried on with seriousness and conviction, during
these years, the work for the promotion of tourism and museums in the area, through con-
crete projects. In 2019, the year of the fifth centenary of Leonardo’s death, we are given a
further opportunity to make culture online and at the same time pay homage to the Genio
Vinciano, with the widespread exhibition of the anthological work of Franco Fossi.
An artist who starts from our territory but whose fame is already international, Franco
Fossi links his poetry to the myth of Leonardo and his perhaps most famous work, the Mona
Lisa. In fact, Fossi’s artistic research revolves around the theoretical reflection that for art, as
with matter, the rule holds that nothing is created or destroyed but everything is transfor-
med; placing the emphasis on the energy of the sign medium to be decoded. Leonardo da
Vinci’s Mona Lisa is identified by him as an icon of art, object of a continuous study in time,
up to conceive the so-called VISUAL DNA. In the works of Fossi we therefore find the Mona
Lisa re-read, reinterpreted, introjected and reworked as an element of our cultural DNA. A
concept that is well combined with the one that binds the eleven municipalities of the Em-
polese Valdelsa, distinct and different but united by so many elements, not always visible to
the naked eye, like a real DNA that is cultural, historical, administrative.
We are therefore pleased to host and promote this exhibition and we thank the artist
and his collectors for believing in this project. A project that in the year of the Leonardian
celebrations gives us the opportunity to celebrate the Genius and our territory, a territory
that gave birth to Leonardo and that left in him and in his DNA that indelible imprint that then
accompanied his brilliant life in the world.

UNA RETE CULTURALE NEL NOSTRO DNA
L’Unione dei Comuni ha portato avanti con serietà e convinzione, in questi anni, il
lavoro per la promozione turistica e museale di area, tramite progetti concreti. Nel 2019, anno
del quinto centenario della morte di Leonardo, ci viene data un’ulteriore occasione per fare
cultura in rete e omaggiare al tempo stesso il Genio vinciano, con la mostra diffusa dell’opera
antologica di Franco Fossi.
Artista che parte dal nostro territorio ma la cui fama è già di livello internazionale,
Franco Fossi lega la sua poetica al mito di Leonardo e alla sua opera forse più celebre, la Gio-
conda. La ricerca artistica di Fossi, infatti, ruota sulla riflessione teorica che per l’arte, come
avviene per la materia, vale la regola che nulla si crea né si distrugge ma tutto si trasforma;
ponendo l’accento sull’energia del medium segnico da decodificare. La Gioconda di Leo-
nardo da Vinci viene da lui identificata come icona dell’arte, oggetto di un continuo studio
nel tempo, sino a concepire il cosiddetto DNA VISIVO. Nelle opere di Fossi quindi troviamo
la Gioconda riletta, reinterpretata, introiettata e rielaborata come elemento del nostro DNA
culturale. Un concetto che ben si unisce a quello che lega gli undici comuni dell’Empolese
Valdelsa, distinti e diversi ma accomunati da tanti elementi, non sempre visibili a occhio nudo,
come un vero e proprio DNA che è culturale, storico, amministrativo.
Siamo quindi lieti di ospitare e promuovere questa mostra e ringraziamo l’artista ed
i suoi collezionisti per aver creduto in questo progetto. Un progetto che nell’anno delle ce-
lebrazioni Leonardiane ci dà occasione di celebrare il Genio e il nostro territorio, un territorio
che a Leonardo ha dato i Natali e che ha lasciato in lui e nel suo DNA quell’impronta indelebile
che ha poi accompagnato la sua geniale vita nel mondo.
