InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile Hotel, completed in
1929, is located on the Chicago´s Magnificent Mile, the heart
of the vibrant downtown and the fashion district. City’s fin-
est shopping, entertainment and cultural attractions location,
where The Art Institute of Chicago and Millennium Park are at
the door step of the hotel. Originally, a 42-story building was
commissioned by the Shriners Organization and designed by ar-
chitect Walter W. Ahlschlager for the Medinah Athletic Club,
an exclusive luxury men’s club. Tower combined elements of
many architectural styles. Indian, Assyrian, Mesopotamian,
Moorish cultures influenced interior and architectural elements
were present in the luxurious building. The members of Medinah
could enjoy a miniature golf course on the twenty-third floor;
also a billiards hall, running track, gymnasium, archery range,
bowling alley, two-story boxing arena, men’s smoking lounge,
and other entertainments. The Club was home of the first pool
built above ground into a skyscraper and one of the biggest pools
in the world at that time - the iconic junior Olympic size swim-
ming pool, where trained Johnny Weissmuller, famous Olympic
athlete and actor of the 20th century!
