CM: All artists need some inspiration to work, and interior
designer are artists too. So, what or who inspires you?
DM: Living and working in New York City you feel a certain
invisible competition. It’s an indirect and positive competition,
which keeps me inspired and pushes me to continuously do better.
Some of the firms I’ve worked for never cease to inspire me: Yabu
Pushelberg and The Rockwell Group. Peter Marino also inspires
me a lot. As an architect, Zaha Hadid remains a true pioneer: not
only for her accomplishments as a female architect, but for the
architectural industry in general.
CM: If you had to pick one project around the world that you
wish it had been made by you, which would it be?
DM: When it opened its doors in 2009, The Mandarin Hotel in
Barcelona by Patricia Urquiola was a surprise to me. Her style and
perspective on design were very fresh and innovative and I could
feel the feminine taste translated in her design and composition
of the space.
CM: Choosing the best pieces to compose a project can be the
secret to getting the best overall result. Although it seems easy,
this is a delicate task and needs full attention on time to execute
it. Do you have some tips for those who do not know well how to
start a challenge like this?
DM: The key is to find a very strong concept based on
understanding the potential target audience; you need to get
a great story, geared towards it’s intended audience. When you
know why you are creating that story, you have your outline. This
is the skeleton you can start building on. Without a story, you
can’t create anything.
CM: What are your favourite brands, those that can never miss in
one of your projects?
DM: I’m not married to a specific brand. My priority is to combine
my client’s wishes and dreams with the brands and pieces that best
fit their vision to create something truly unique. I do work with
the same team of craftsman and women: someone for curtains,
upholstery, carpentry etc.… A lot of our pieces are custom-made
for specific projects and we often repurpose pieces to suit the
space. This helps create a unique story not only for our clients, but
for everyone experiencing our projects.
