ECOLOGY
Since its inception, BROKIS has been committed
to fostering a healthy relationship with the planet
and the local community through a combination
of sustainable manufacturing practices and
environmental stewardship.
In 2020, with the aim of achieving greater cohesion
and efficiency between BROKIS and Janštejn
Glassworks, BROKIS was incorporated into Janštejn
Glass Group (JGG). This led to the creation
of BROKISGLASS, an innovative, ecofriendly material,
and the founding of a new company under the same
name.
In the production of lighting glass, as much as 30%
of each handblown piece is cut off and discarded
as cullet (glass fragments). This is an inherent part
of the glassmaking process. One of the main drivers
behind the creation of the company BROKISGLASS
was a need to overcome entrenched perceptions
of cullet as waste. Seen instead as a valuable raw
material, cullet is upcycled to form BROKISGLASS
decorative panels
and mosaics.
The remarkable properties of BROKISGLASS panels
make them ideal for a wide range of applications,
from architecture and construction, to interior
and product design.
The upcycling of glass waste is taken even further
with BROKIS CONCRETE, a special blend of concrete
with an admixture of glass fragments and glass dust.
This functional material is a core design element
in several BROKIS lighting collections.
In early 2025, BROKISGLASS and Janštejn Glassworks
completed a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
This analytical comparative methodology identifies
potential environmental impacts across the entire
life cycle of a product (cradle-to-grave), including
those that may not be immediately apparent. The key
output of the LCA process is an Environmental
Product Declaration (EPD) for BROKISGLASS panels
and mosaics. Verified by an independent third party
and issued by an authorized certification institution,
the EPD is based on measurable data points relating
to the products’ environmental performance,
such as energy usage and waste production.
It represents a comprehensive set of guidelines
that help shape the company’s long-term
sustainability strategy.
