THERE ARE ABOUT 20,000 SURVIVING
POLAR BEARS IN THE WORLD. THEIR
POPULATION COVERS THE POLAR AREAS
OF FIVE NATIONS; USA (ALASKA), CANADA,
NORWAY,
DENMARK
(GREENLAND)
AND
RUSSIA.
THEY ARE AMONG THE MOST ENDANGERED
ANIMAL SPECIES AFFECTED BY CLIMATE
CHANGE. YEAR AFTER YEAR, THEIR FROZEN
ENVIRONMENT
IS
REDUCED,
FORCING
THEM TO SOMETIMES MOVE TO HUMAN
SETTLEMENTS
ATTRACTED
BY
EASILY
AVAILABLE FOOD TO MAKE THEM MORE AND
MORE OMNIVOROUS LIKE WILD-PIGS.
THE NATURAL CLOCK HAS SET THE PACE
OF THEIR ECOSYSTEM FOR THOUSANDS
AND THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND HAS BEEN
DISORGANIZED IN THE LAST FEW DECADES.
THE POLAR BEAR HAS NO RIVALS. THE
INUIT GROUPS HUNT THEM FOR THEIR OWN
SUBSISTENCE PURPOSES AND SKINS, WITH
THE SIDE EFFECT OF REGULATING THEIR
NUMBER. THEY CHASE POLAR BEARS RISKING
THEIR OWN LIVES. NOW, THEIR NUMBERS
ARE RAPIDLY DECLINING. IN ADDITION TO THE
DESTRUCTION OF THEIR HABITAT, THE BEARS
ARE HUNTED AND TRADED INTERNATIONALLY
FOR THEIR SKIN AND OTHER BODY PARTS.
THE
OLD,
ORIGINAL
INUIT
WERE
TRUE
ANIMISTS. THEY DID NOT BELIEVE IN GODS.
THEY BELIEVED IN THE WORLD IN WHICH ALL
THINGS AND ANIMALS HAD A SPIRIT, AND THAT
TAKING A BEAR’S LIFE IS A LIFE OWED TO THE
SPIRIT OF THE WORLD.
IT IS TIME TO ACT NOW, TO PROTECT OUR
BEARS AND PRESERVE OUR PLANET FOR THE
GENERATIONS TO COME.
