Hotel at Six Stockholm, Sweden
EN A former Brutalist bank in the center of Stockholm
provides the backdrop for the Hotel At Six, designed by
London’s Universal Design Studio. Set in Brunkebergstorg
Square, the hotel sits amongst a collection of lively cultural
buildings that animate the Swedish capital. At Six is also
an art destination itself and is home to a sprawling collection
that includes artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Julian Opie,
Sol Le Witt, Tacita Dean, Spencer Finch, Richard Long
and Marijke van Warmerdam, which can be found
interspersed within the reception, restaurant and bar.
In imagining the interior, the designers took cues
from the building’s original architecture. “It opens a dialogue
between the hotel’s brutalist 1970s setting and
a meticulously curated art collection”, they explain.
“The result is a luxurious destination that offers a thought-
provoking, contemporary version of a metropolitan grand
hotel”. With those references in mind, the designers dressed
the rooms, restaurant and bar in a palette of deep, moody
greys that evoke the building’s imposing concrete facade.
Since the decor is largely monochrome — with only slight
variations on a deep shade of slate — they incorporated,
instead, a rich variety of textures within the spaces, which
includes raw concrete, marble accents and sumptuous
textiles, all with the occasional brass or matte black element
in the form of sleek contemporary lighting and furniture.
The designers continued with the minimal aesthetic
in the bedrooms and bathrooms, which resemble nordic
spas lined in white marble. However, they saved their most
expressive design flourishes for last. Within the hotel’s
penthouse suite, which features a wraparound terrace
overlooking Stockholm’s picturesque skyline, they installed
a luxurious In-Out marble soaking tub, ideal for warming up
after a winter walk in Stockholm’s snowy streets.

IT Hotel At Six, ricavato all’interno di un edificio in stile
brutalista che in origine ospitava un istituto bancario, sorge
in una delle zone culturalmente e artisticamente più vivaci
di Stoccolma, in piazza Brunkebergstorg. Il progetto, firmato
dal londinese Universal Design Studio, gioca proprio sul
dialogo fra Brutalismo anni ’70 e arte. Disseminate nella
reception, nel ristorante e nel bar, opere di artisti come
Olafur Eliasson, Julian Opie, Sol Le Witt, Tacita Dean,
Spencer Finch, Richard Long e Marijke van Warmerdam
trasformano l’hotel in una galleria. “Il risultato è un grand
hotel metropolitano in chiave contemporanea, uno spazio
lussuoso e al tempo stesso ricco di stimoli culturali”,
spiegano gli architetti. La palette di grigi profondi e lunari
che domina nelle camere, nel ristorante e nel bar richiama
l’imponente facciata in cemento dell’edificio. A contrastare
questa monocromia, la varietà delle texture che spazia dal
cemento grezzo ai marmi e ai tessuti sontuosi, con qualche
nota di ottone e nero opaco per l’illuminazione e gli elementi
di arredo decisamente contemporanei.
Estetica minimale anche nei bagni che,
completamente rivestiti in marmo bianco, evocano
atmosfere da spa nordica. Con un vero coup de théâtre
nell’attico suite. In questo spazio, dove l’avvolgente
terrazza si affaccia sullo skyline di Stoccolma, la lussuosa
vasca da bagno In-Out in marmo è assolutamente perfetta
per godersi un confortevole tepore al ritorno da una
passeggiata per le strade innevate della città.
