The jointed arm lamp with balanced
movement is a ‘classic’ type, a
difficult trial for a designer. In fact,
the models that belong to the history
of lamps have introduced solutions
and functional parameters that are a
challenge for any project aiming at
being original and innovative. String
is both technically and esthetically
new. Its structure consists of a thin
metal profile that embodies the
simplicity and functionality of an old
work tool, the yardstick that folds
together and when extended becomes
one single line. The arms of the lamp
are made of extruded aluminum
with double–T cross–section. The
movement is compensated by the
elasticised cable sheathed in synthetic
fabric (hence the name of the
lamp) that runs inside the extruded
aluminum arm’s slot. The coloured
cable, inspired by sportswear, gives
String a sophisticated and ‘domestic’
air that makes it easy to be added
to any home or office décor. Being
absolutely free to move, the lamp
folds and rotates in any direction so
as to direct the light and – just like
a yardstick – can extend completely
to become a single graphic sign,
a linear structure that hides all of
its mechanisms (cables, bearings,
pulleys, hinges). The adjustable head
can be easily handled thanks to the
central hole. The switch located in
the head controls the direct light
of the LED source, today also with
dim–to–warm technology. These
esthetic and technical features have
resulted in a whole family of lamps
that also includes an extra–large
version. String XL, in fact, has been
designed to illuminate from above
a spot of the home (a corner of the
sofa, the dinner table, the study area)
with the utmost liberty: the direct
light is truly adjustable thanks to the
lamp’s balanced and fluid movement.
The lamp’s structure is ‘gigantic’ but
rigid and light–weight. It has been
built by expanding the size of the
extruded aluminum parts of the table
String version and by using an elastic
XL cable to balance movement.
