The cathedral is one of the jewels in Graz's city crown,
along with the castle, the old university, and the mau-
soleum. The challenge was to incorporate modern LED
lighting in the various areas of the listed, sacred build-
ing such that it is not visible at fi rst glance but can still
be controlled in a contemporary and intelligent way.
The frescoes and architectural elements are located in
areas where the installation of lighting elements would
also be ideal, but these must not be touched. The
challenge for the lighting design was to fi nd a solution
that would create an ideal lighting situation while also
integrating the lighting elements into the room.
The solution was to custom-make two types of lumi-
naires for the historic building. We developed cylindri-
cal suspended luminaires for the cathedral's central
nave and a suspended, ring-shaped track system
with a remarkable diameter of fi ve metres for the side
aisles. The fi ve cylindrical luminaires in the central
nave were fi tted with MOVE IT JUST 55 and SASSO
100 spotlights. In terms of technology, the lighting
solutions feature both direct and indirect components,
making it possible to create the desired lighting mood
for the respective liturgical celebrations. To this end, a
wide range of easily activated lighting situations were
programmed.
