Selecting the right recessed housing begins with knowing the Installation method as well as
understanding how the space will be used. The guide below will help you with the process of
selecting your housing.
REMODEL OR NEW CONSTRUCTION
A “remodel” Installation typically is an existing room project where the Installation is made by cutting through
existing ceiling materials. The housing will not be supported by joists but by the ceiling material, such as drywall.
A “new construction” project is one that has access to the ceiling and joists; where insulation and drywall are not
yet installed. New construction housings are nailed directly into the joists with adjustable bar hangers.
IC OR NON-IC HOUSING
IC (insulation contact) housings can come in direct contact with insulation materials. Insulation should not
be compressed.
Non-IC (no insulation contact) housings are for areas without insulation or where insulation can be kept a
minimum of 3" away from housing.
SIZE OF HOUSING
4” housings are designed for a smaller, sleek look in your ceiling. Best used in smaller spaces for a minimal look.
6” housings are for the standard large aperture approach in your ceiling. Can be used in tall entryways and two-
story hallways or high ceilings.
ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
AIR-TIGHT HOUSINGS are sealed to prevent air from escaping into the ceiling / floor above; a benefit to
heating /cooling efficiency.
A RECESSED TRIM is the “ring” blending the recessed housing, lamp and ceiling material into a clean finish.
A BAFFLE is the cone-like piece that surrounds the inside of the housing around the bulb; they can be
smooth or ridged and help shape the light and minimize glare.
