DESIGN MADE IN ITALY
NICCOLÒ BIDDAU’S JOURNEY INTO THE INFINITY OF DESIGN
In his book “Design Made in Italy,” Niccolò Biddau,
recognized as one of the best industrial and architectural
photographers, celebrates design as a testament to eternity.
Rather than merely paying homage to contemporaneity,
his photographs aim to immortalize timeless beauty, those
aspects of design that withstand the passage of time and
the threat of obsolescence. The objects he has captured
with his camera are not mere static figures; they are silent
witnesses of continuous evolution, symbols that stand
as pillars of excellence and craftsmanship in a constantly
changing world. These are powerful representations
of enduring design, observing and accompanying us,
challenging and transcending the test of time.
In his photographs, Biddau captures the eternal dance
of design, illustrating how design objects are not just
spectators but also symbols of beauty and resilience. They
defy the ephemeral and the commonplace, showcasing an
elegance that transcends eras.
His work stands against the standardization of a globalized
culture, reconnecting viewers to a tangible and material
reality. Through the lens of his camera, he reminds the
world of the unforgettable value that resides in each piece
of design, despite the digital era dominating our existence.
“In my interpretation of the Lego table by Draga & Aurel for Visionnaire,
I aimed to go beyond simply documenting a piece
of furniture. My intention was to convey the dialogue
between the solidity of craftsmanship and the
lightness of innovation that this piece represents. The
photograph is intended to be an ode to the synergy
between material and form, a hymn to experimentation
and avant-garde design.
The black and white photography not only possesses its
own intrinsic elegance but also the ability to transform
the subject into a timeless vision. The sculptural light
shaped the perception of the table, enhancing the
irregular surfaces and finishes that narrate Draga &
Aurel’s almost alchemical approach to materials. Each
angle, each curve becomes a visual statement.
The theatricality of the scene is emphasized by isolating
the subject against the deep black of the background.
This not only serves to capture the viewer’s attention
but also to symbolize how design can emerge from
the darkness of the ordinary, supporting the idea that
functionality can coexist with art. In this visual space,
the “Lego” table is not just an object but an entity that
defies gravity, inviting not only to be used but also to be
contemplated.”
