Ludovico Diaz de Santillana (Roma 1931– Terranuova
Bracciolini 1989) si laureò alla Scuola di Architettura a
Venezia e si dedicò alla docenza come assistente di
Ignazio Gardella.
Nel 1953 sposò Anna Venini, la figlia di Paolo. Alla morte di
Paolo Venini, nel 1959, assunse la direzione dell’azienda
fino al 1985. Significativa la sua direzione che mantenne gli
intenti di Paolo Venini ospitando giovani artisti americani
venuti per scoprire e studiare le tecniche vetrarie dell’isola.
Figura di spicco presente in Venini fu lo scultore Thomas
Stearns che lasciò un segno indelebile con l’opera la
Sentinella di Venezia. Ludovico Diaz de Santillana si espresse
anche come designer, disegnò insieme a Tobia Scarpa la
celebre collezione dei “Battuti”, e anche i Colletti e le Murrine
trasparenti. Grande successo ebbe anche la creazione
luminosa Tappeto Volante, e Tazebao. Nei primi anni
Ottanta creò con Laura de Santillana le nuove vetrate, che
ottennero la segnalazione al “Compasso d’Oro” del 1983,
composte di piastre realizzate con l’uso preminente delle
murrine.
Ludovico Diaz de Santillana (Rome 1931 – Terranuova
Bracciolini 1989) graduated from the Venice school of
architecture and embarked on a teaching career as assistant
to Ignazio Gardella.
In 1953 he married Anna Venini, Paolo’s daughter. After Paolo
Venini’s death in 1959, he took over the management of the
company until 1985. His tenure as manager was decisive:
following through on Paolo Venini’s vision, he hosted at Venini
young American artists who came to discover and study
Murano glassmaking techniques. Prominent among them was
the sculptor Thomas Stearns, who left an indelible mark with
his work “Sentinella di Venezia”.
Ludovico Diaz de Santillano also found expression as a
designer: together with Tobia Scarpa he created the highly
praised “Battuti” collection, as well as the “Colletti” and the
transparent “Murrine”.
The luminous creation Tappeto Volante enjoyed great success,
as did Tazebao. In the early 1980s, together with Laura
de Santillana, he made the new Vetrate, tiles made primarily
with Murrine, which received a special mention from the
“Compasso d’Oro” industrial design award in 1983.
Toni Zuccheri (1936-2008), figlio del pittore animalista Luigi
Zuccheri, frequentò la facoltà di architettura di Venezia sotto
la guida di alcuni tra i più grandi nomi dell’epoca come
Franco Albini e Carlo Scarpa. Artista, architetto, designer e
scultore, Zuccheri si avvicinò al vetro nel 1960 quando,
giovanissimo, entrò alla Venini dove trovò terreno fertile per
le sue sperimentazioni, esplorando le tecniche di lavorazione
della fornace. Ebbe l’opportunità di lavorare con personaggi
di spicco del mondo dell’arte e del design come Giò Ponti,
Lucio Fontana e Gaetano Pesce. Concepì “Il Bestiario”, i suoi
primi animali in vetro, talora su basi in bronzo, per il quale
trasse ispirazione dalla campagna del suo nativo Friuli e che
venne presentato alla Biennale di Venezia del 1964. Propose
anche i primi vasi, presentati alla Biennale quattro anni più
tardi. Sperimentò con Venini l’uso degli stampi “a fermo”,
utilizzati nelle opere Ninfee e Tronchi, che ebbe lungo
successo grazie all’effetto antidecorativo, in linea con il gusto
minimalista di quegli anni.
Sempre negli anni sessanta, assieme a Giò Ponti, Zuccheri
disegnò per Venini le celebri “Vetrate Grosse”. Nel 1972
espose a Milano le lampade ideate per VeArt e partecipò alla
Triennale presentando i Vasoni. Progettò, nel 1989, la
Reggiani Light Gallery in 800 Fifth Avenue a New York,
dove espose le sue opere nell’anno seguente. Alcune sue
opere vennero presentate, nel 1996, al Kunstmuseum di
Düsseldorf, nella mostra “Italienisches Glas. Murano Miland,
1930- 1970”. Nel 1999 espose il suo Albero delle stagioni
nella sala del maggior consiglio di palazzo Ducale a Venezia,
in occasione della rassegna internazionale “Aperto Vetro.
Peculiari sono le sue sculture in forma di animali, nelle più
svariate espressioni composte da lavorazioni vitree. Le sue
opere sono esposte in alcuni tra i più importanti musei
internazionali.
Toni Zuccheri, son of the wildlife painter Luigi Zuccheri,
frequented the Venice Faculty of Architecture under the
guidance of some of the greatest names of the time, such as
Franco Albini and Carlo Scarpa. Artist, architect, designer and
sculptor, Zuccheri approached the glass medium in 1960 when,
at a very young age, he entered Venini, where he found fertile
ground for his experiments, exploring glass manufacturing
techniques. He had the opportunity to work with leading
figures from the world of art and design such as Giò Ponti,
Lucio Fontana and Gaetano Pesce. Drawing his inspiration
from the countryside around his native Friuli, he conceived
the “Bestiary”, his first glass animals, sometimes mounted on
bronze bases, which he presented at the Venice Biennale in
1964. He also proposed his first vases, presented at the Biennale
four years later. With Venini he experimented with the use
of “a fermo” moulds, used in the Ninfee and Tronchi works,
which enjoyed enduring success thanks to the anti-decorative
effect, in line with the minimalist aesthetic of those years. Also
in the 1960s, together with Giò Ponti, Zuccheri designed the
celebrated “Vetrate Grosse” for Venini. In 1972 he exhibited the
lamps conceived for VeArt and took part in the Triennale with
the Vasoni. In 1989, he designed the Reggiani Light Gallery at
800 Fifth Avenue in New York, where he exhibited his works the
following year. In 1996, some of his works were presented at the
Düsseldorf Kunstmuseum in the “Italienisches Glas. Murano
Miland, 1930-1970” exhibition. In 1999, he exhibited his Tree
of the Seasons in the Chamber of the Great Council in the
Doge’s Palace in Venice, on the occasion of the “Venezia Aperto
Vetro” international exhibition. His later works are idiosyncratic
sculptures in the form of animals, which he created by collecting
residues of glass and other materials and setting them on a
metal structure: this procedure always resulted in unique and
unreproducible pieces. His works are exhibited in some of the
most important international museums.
