PROGETTI DI DESIGN 09
The creative approach of the Milanese
design studio explores the dialogue
between the modern era and the historic
legacy of the twentieth century. Working
with a fascinating mix of materials, forms
and technologies, the studio aims to create
objects to enhance everyday life and
resonate with the past, while remaining
firmly rooted in the present. “Every project
is a chance to try out a new creative
process: an object can be created from
the response to a specific need or from
experimenting with opportunities offered
by a material, or maybe by a simple gesture.
Sometimes, as with the Pianca Siviglia
series, we rework elements of the past
to obtain something new and original”.
The Siviglia series came about from the
desire to give cabinet furniture and bedroom
wardrobe doors a boldly three-dimensional
look, the way furniture was created before
the adventof industrial design. There is thus
a reference to traditional furniture, but at the
same time the series of modules repeated
in a sequence is the result of a modern
combinatorial method.
Echoes of
the past
— Q&A
— Do you still sketch by hand?
Sketching by hand is a way of putting ideas
down on paper. Very early on, though,
we shift from paper to screen. Digital is
very effective in keeping control of many
variables and experimenting with dozens
of variants in a short window of time.
— If you had to compare your design style
to an art movement, what would it be?
We’re close to contemporary art, which
does not have a defined style. In today’s
hyper-connected, ultra-fast world, a single
style to reflect it can no longer exist, as
happened in the past. This is why every
project we work on is different from the
next.
— What is the strangest or most unusual
thing that has inspired you for a design?
We designed a unique piece of furniture
for a historic aristocratic residence where
everything was perfectly preserved as
it was two centuries ago, but for some
reason, there was no bed in the master
bedroom. It was a challenge to find the
right tone to engage with the past without
being overwhelmed by it.
