"The evening slowly marches on,
and I, gazing, hope to see."
Eduardo Chillida
«La tarde avanza lentamente y yo
mirando quiero ver.»
It has been 12 years since nanimarquina's first tribute to
Eduardo Chillida. This year marks the 100th anniversary
of Chillida's birth and, to celebrate the occasion, we have
decided to offer a renewed tribute to his legacy through
four new pieces.
Renowned for his monumental works in steel and concre-
te, his lesser-known work comprises an extensive body of
drawings and Gravitations (a series of collages).
The Gravitations were not simple overlapping paper cut-
outs, but relief sculptures. Chillida playfully took the concept
of gravitating almost to the limit, because the paper weighed
so little. By suspending different types of paper he achieved
a dramatic effect, exerting a new tension in the way the
paper fragments overlapped or intercalated, in turn creating
spaces of light and shadow between them.
This tension was our prime focus in transforming each of the
chosen works into a rug. By playing with craft techniques
such as hand knotting, Soumak or hand tufting, as well as
with fibers, wool and silk, and with various heights, our new
collection captures that suspension that Chillida sought in
his gravitations.
Four new pieces that broaden the Chillida collection. Three
rugs and one tapestry in which craftsmanship, once again,
is our only route to achieving the level of detail and exce-
llence that we pursue in all our rugs. A route that, in its own
way, intrinsically involves an intimate way of doing things,
perhaps the way Eduardo Chillida also worked.
