Modern Timelessness
In 1975, the founder of B&B Italia – Piero Ambrogio Busnelli –
invented Maxalto with Afra and Tobia Scarpa. The company,
whose primary material was wood, specialised in modern
furniture distinguished by refined artisanal execution. Perhaps
Busnelli did not imagine back then that his product range
would be continuously renewed for another 45 years, yet
this is exactly what happened when Citterio picked up the
baton from the Scarpas and commenced the contemporary
reconstruction of a small encyclopaedia of furniture. Guided
by a bias for bourgeois interiors furnished with design from the
modern movement, he favoured that particular French version
where the spare pieces by Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand
stand close to the gentle shapes and precious materials of
Jean-Michel Frank. Having understood and assimilated the
teachings of these masters, Citterio mined Maxalto as a design
laboratory for research and the production of neoclassic modern
pieces. Neoclassic because they were filtered in form and finish
through the contemporary eye of an Italian architect; and modern
because they are comfortable items that look to the future of
the home. The collection stems from the logical, well-grounded
development of an idea of a homogeneous environment where
furniture and objects can be added and layered fluidly. First in the
designer’s ideation, and then in the reality of production, fidelity
to the Maxalto DNA was maintained while refreshing it with new
materials and inventions. Those who will browse the prodigious
pages that follow – an almost cinematographic representation of
the combinations and semantics of a wide universe of products
– will soon be impressed by a certain intrinsic quality, namely
the constant successful endeavour to create a landscape of
innovative furniture. They will immediately perceive the quality
of construction, before they have even touched or used the pieces.
It is intuited rapidly, just by seeing the photographs, how great
the content of skilled craftsmanship is, how sartorial the finishing
is. These models were born to be produced serially, responding
to all the strict criteria and durability standards that a high-end
producer has in place. Yet for the exquisite quality of details from
large to tiny, all informed by the venerable tradition of craft, each
piece is unique. They are equal to one another, but different. They
represent the personalisation of the indoor environment that was
once the privilege of cultured and even aristocratic society. His
fondness for this reference led Citterio to satisfy the desire of
many people: to live comfortably with furniture and accessories
that express one’s very own individual taste.
Quando nel 1975 Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, fondatore di B&B
Italia, con Afra e Tobia Scarpa inventa Maxalto - un’impresa
capace di produrre mobili moderni attraverso una raffinata
esecuzione artigiana, avendo come prima materia il legno - forse
non immagina che il suo catalogo si rinnoverà in continuazione
per altri 45 anni. Eppure è quello che accade con Antonio
Citterio, che nel 1995 raccoglie il testimone di progettista
dagli Scarpa e si lancia nella sua ricostruzione contemporanea
di una piccola “enciclopedia dell’arredamento”. Lo guida
l’intuizione di un genere di ambiente borghese affine ai pezzi
di design del Movimento Moderno: specialmente declinati in
quella particolare versione di cultura francese, dove i mobili
essenziali di Le Corbusier / Charlotte Perriand stanno vicino
alle forme gentili e ai preziosi materiali di Jean Michel Frank.
Compresa e assimilata la lezione di quei Maestri, Maxalto
diventa per Citterio il laboratorio produttivo dove mettere
in atto la ricerca e la produzione di una collezione di “neo-
classici moderni”. Neo-classici perché filtrati nelle forme e nelle
finiture attraverso lo sguardo contemporaneo di un architetto
italiano, moderni perché intendono essere ancora soluzioni
per il comfort, che però guardano al futuro della casa come
sviluppo logico e coerente di un’idea di ambiente omogeneo e
coerente: dove mobili e oggetti si aggiungono fluidamente uno
all’altro, prima nell’ideario del progettista e poi nella realtà della
produzione, mantenendo coerenza e fedeltà al DNA Maxalto,
rigenerato attraverso nuovi materiali e invenzioni progettuali.
Per questo chi si troverà a scorrere le ricche pagine che seguono
e rappresentano, quasi cinematograficamente, ambientazioni e
significati di un intero universo di prodotti sarà presto colpito
da una loro qualità intrinseca: la sfida continuamente raccolta
e vinta a creare un paesaggio di arredi innovativi, ma di cui
si percepisce al primo sguardo la qualità della realizzazione,
prima ancora di toccarli ed usarli. Si intuisce rapidamente, già
dalle immagini fotografiche, che dentro questi mobili e oggetti
è presente un alto contenuto di lavoro artigianale, la rifinitura
sartoriale di un modello che nasce per essere prodotto in
serie, con tutti i criteri e gli standard di qualità rigorosi che
un’industria di alta gamma richiede: ma che per la qualità di
piccoli e grandi accorgimenti, che possono venire solo da una
lunghissima tradizione del fare, diventa alla fine un pezzo unico.
Uguali tra loro, eppure uno diverso dall’altro, questi arredi
rappresentano quella personalizzazione del luogo dell’abitare
un tempo privilegio di una società colta, quasi aristocratica, che
ha fatto da modello a Citterio per rappresentare e soddisfare
quello che è divenuto col tempo il desiderio di molti: abitare
confortevolmente con mobili e ambienti che siano anche
espressione di uno stile di vita personale, quindi unico.
