Psychosomatic illness that
causes rapid heartbeat,
dizziness, confusion, and
even hallucinations when an
individual is exposed to art,
usually when the art is particularly
beautiful or a large amount of art
is ina single place.
The illness is named after the famous
19th Century French author Stendhal
(pseudonym of henri-Marie Beyle), who
gave the fi rst detailed description of the
phenomenon he experienced during his
1817 visit to the holy Cross Basilica in
Florence, Italy, and published it in his book
“Naples and Florence:
A journey from Milan to Reggio”
“I had reached the emotion point where celestial
sensations given by the Fine Arts and passionate
feelings come across. Leaving Holy Cross my heart
was beating, life was run out in me,
I was with fear or falling.”
