FREIFRAU: Seit der Gründung seid ihr als Designer und
Du, Birgit, außerdem als Art-Direktorin für Freifrau tätig.
Ist es ein Vor- oder Nachteil, so nah an dem Unternehmen
zu sein?
HOFFMANN KAHLEYSS: Für uns ist es ein großer Vor­
teil. Dadurch, dass wir Freifrau von Anfang gestalterisch
begleitet haben, haben wir deren Werte stark verinner­
licht. Darüber hinaus bekommen wir über den Vertrieb
ein direktes Feedback aus dem Handel. Die Idee für
einen abnehmbaren Bezug für unseren Leya Chair, der
nun bei starker Verschmutzung gereinigt werden kann,
entstand zum Beispiel aus einer Anforderung aus der
Gastro nomie.
FF: Ihr habt Freifrau von Anfang an begleitet. Wie habt ihr
Freifrau als Marke damals gesehen? Wie seht ihr sie heute?
HK: Freifrau ist mit der Idee gestartet, Möbel mit femini­
ner, eleganter Ausstrahlung zu kreieren. Inzwischen ist
das Unternehmen gewachsen und hat sich als sehr nah­
bare Marke entwickelt – sowohl in ihrem Markenauftritt
als auch im Umgang mit den Kunden.
Für die Zukunft wünschen wir uns, dass Freifrau weiter­
hin mutig ist und unverwechselbare und einzigartige Pro­
dukte fertigt.
FF: Gäbe es die Aufgabe, einen Freifrau-Stuhl zu entwerfen,
der etwas ganz anderes ausstrahlen sollte als das Bisherige:
Wie sähe euer Entwurf aus?
HK: Für unseren nächsten Entwurf denken wir gerade
über einen Stuhl nach, der das Thema Kernleder in einer
neuen innovativen Gestaltung aufgreift.
FREIFRAU: Right from the start, both of you have de-
signed for Freifrau and you, Birgit, have acted as art direc-
tor, too.
Is it more of an advantage or a drawback to be working so
closely with the brand?
HOFFMANN KAHLEYSS: It is undoubtedly an advan­
tage. Having worked with Freifrau from the very begin­
ning, we have really taken the brand values on board and
made them part of our work. We also get direct feedback
from trade customers: the idea of having a removable,
cleanable cover for Leya chairs came from restaurateurs,
for example.
FF: You’ve been with Freifrau from the very beginning.
What was the brand like then – and what is it like now?
HK: Freifrau was launched with the idea of making ele­
gant furniture with a feminine aura. The company has
grown since and the brand has become very approach­
able, both in terms of its appearance, but also in how it
deals with its clients. If we had a wish for the future, it
would be for Freifrau to stay bold and to keep designing
unmistakable, unique products.
FF: If you were asked to design a Freifrau chair that had to
look completely different to every single other one to date:
what would it look like?
HK: We want every chair we develop for Freifrau to be
as comfortable as it is elegant – and to give off. For our
next design, we are currently thinking about a chair that
takes up the subject of sleek leather in a new innovative
design.
