Boccaccio’s legacy, that travels through time and encourages dialogue
This is what anniversaries are for: to remember, to revive memories, to promote gratitude toward people and
works for which we cannot help but feel indebted; but at the same time, they serve to seek new interpretations
and new narratives, to experiment with connections and influences.
Anniversaries look to the past, but they become fully meaningful if they are not limited to commemoration, if
they stay in the present and look to the future, without excessive reverential fear. This is the challenge taken
up by the Ente Nazionale Giovanni Boccaccio, taking the opportunity of the 650th anniversary of the death of
the extraordinary author of the Decameron.
On the one hand, there is the genius of Boccaccio, a symbol of Tuscany that belongs beyond Tuscany alone,
because Boccaccio can rightfully be considered the father of Italian literature alongside Dante and Petrarch,
the author of the first important prose text in the vernacular, that is, in our language. On the other hand, there
is the intersection with contemporary art and its language: art that calls to art, that travels through time and
encourages dialogue.
In this context, the interpretation of a great artist such as Marco Lodola, who has already combined his creative
talent with Tuscany on several occasions, and even with the Region of Tuscany itself, to which, in this very 2025, he
donated one of his Cavallo Alato, inaugurated in Piazza Duomo in Florence, under the regional presidency building:
a tribute to Tuscan history and identity in a contemporary and visionary key, in a celebration of light and color that
projects our Pegasus upwards.
And now Boccaccio and Lodola, together: a beautiful challenge and, at the same time, a wonderful opportunity,
which can be enjoyed not only during this year of anniversary celebrations, being it the heritage of this
anniversary. And I believe this should also be strongly emphasized: because this dialogue between different
eras and different artistic expressions gives rise to something that permanently enriches the Museum of
Boccaccio’s House and offers an additional experience to those who visit Certaldo Alta, wishing to come into
contact with our great 14th-century figure.
For all this, I would like to congratulate all those who conceived, created, and supported this project, which I
consider a model for future anniversaries that we will celebrate here in Tuscany.

L’eredità di Boccaccio, che attraversa il tempo e sollecita al dialogo
A questo servono gli anniversari, a ricordare, a ravvivare la memoria, ad alimentare la gratitudine nei confronti
di persone e opere di cui non possiamo non sentirci debitori; ma allo stesso tempo servono a cercare nuove
chiavi di interpretazioni e nuove narrazioni, a sperimentare connessioni e contaminazioni.
Guardano al passato, gli anniversari, ma acquistano pienamente senso se non si limitano a essere
commemorazione, se stanno nel presente e guardano al futuro, senza troppi timori reverenziali. Ed è questa
la sfida che ha raccolto l’Ente Nazionale Giovanni Boccaccio, cogliendo l’occasione dei 650 anni dalla morte
dello straordinario autore del Decamerone.
Da una parte il genio di Boccaccio, un simbolo della Toscana che non appartiene solo alla Toscana,
perché a buon diritto Boccaccio può essere considerato il padre della letteratura italiana assieme a Dante
e Petrarca, l’autore del primo importante testo di prosa in volgare, cioè nella nostra lingua, dall’altra
l’incrocio con l’arte contemporanea e il suo linguaggio: arte che chiama arte, che attraversa il tempo e
sollecita al dialogo.
In questo contesto l’interpretazione di un grande artista quale Marco Lodola, che peraltro ha già più volte
incrociato la sua capacità creativa con la Toscana e anche con la stessa Regione Toscana a cui, in questo
stesso 2025, ha regalato un suo Cavallo Alato, inaugurato in piazza Duomo, sotto la presidenza regionale: un
omaggio alla storia e all’identità toscana in chiave contemporanea e visionaria, in una festa di luce e colore
che proietta verso l’alto il nostro Pegaso.
E ora Boccaccio e Lodola, insieme: una bella sfida e insieme una bellissima opportunità, di cui peraltro si
potrà beneficiare non solo in quest’anno di celebrazioni legate all’anniversario, perché di quest’anniversario
costituisce l’eredità. E anche questo credo vada sottolineato con forza: perché tra questo dialogo tra epoche
ed espressioni artistiche diverse nasce qualcosa che arricchisce in via permanente Casa Boccaccio e offre
un’esperienza in più a chi visiterà Certaldo Alta, volendo entrare in contratto anche con questo nostro grande
del Trecento.
Per tutto questo voglio complimentarmi con tutti coloro che hanno ideato, realizzato, sostenuto questo progetto,
che considero un modello anche per futuri anniversari che avremo da celebrare qui in Toscana.
