Such \nwas not the case in 1981, however, \nwhen Aurelio Zanotta decided to \nput his Fenis alpine chair into \nproduction. The striking design, \ncrafted from solid wood. was created \nspecifically for Mollino’s office \nin Castello del Valentino–the head \noffices of Turin Polytechnic–where \nhe had worked as a Professor of \nArchitectural Composition since 1953, \nand later, as the rector.\nFenis’s sinuously curved back \nand splayed legs seemed almost \nanachronistic in the late Fifties, \nbut the chair’s singular and timeless \ndesign was hailed as a triumph upon \nits re-release in the early Eighties. \nCarlo Mollino’s design displays an \narabesque of anatomical lines and \nundulating trajectories evocative of \nski tracks on snow, or the flight path \nof an acrobatic plane. It is precisely \nthis timelessness that Zanotta has \ncontinued to pay homage to for nearly \nfour decades. \nTo truly understand and recognize \nMollino’s brilliance as a designer \nrequires a wide view.  Together with \nthe cabinetmaker and craftsman, he \ncollaborates closely with the client, \nespecially those with whom he had \npreviously worked, incorporating the \ngenius loci. As such, every object \nengages in a form of dialogue with \ncertain elements of the home: enlarged \nphotographs, a particular aspect of \nTurin, a specific detail within\nthe space. \n \nEach piece of furnishing thus forms\npart of a figurative narration, with\nthe architect serving as director, \nplaywright, and actor.\nProf. Pier Paolo Peruccio\nLa figura di Carlo Mollino (1905-1973) \nè conosciuta e ampiamente studiata, \noggi. Non era così nel 1981 quando \nAurelio Zanotta decise di produrre una \nsedia alpina, Fenis, in legno massello \nprogettata dall’architetto torinese per \nil suo ufficio al Castello del Valentino, \nsede del Politecnico di Torino di cui, \ndal 1953, è stato Professore Ordinario \ndi Composizione Architettonica e, \nsuccessivamente, Direttore dell’omonimo \nIstituto.\nFenis si presenta con forme scultoree \ndi matrice vernacolare, una scelta \nprogettuale che se alla fine degli anni \nCinquanta è parsa quasi anacronistica, \nall’inizio degli anni Ottanta ha \ncontinuato a sprigionare, travalicando \nil tempo, tutto il suo carattere \nonirico e immaginifico. Il disegno \ndi Carlo Mollino si fa generatore di \nforme zoomorfe, linee anatomiche che \ns’incurvano disegnando arabeschi, \ntraiettorie sinuose come quelle lasciate \ndagli sci sulla neve o dagli aerei \nacrobatici nel cielo. Ed è proprio a \nquesta attualità senza tempo che Zanotta, \ndopo quasi 40 anni, continua a rendere \nomaggio.\nL’attività di Mollino designer si può \ncomprendere solo attraverso una lettura \nampia, che dal lavoro degli ebanisti e \ndegli artigiani sia in grado di guardare \nalla relazione stretta con la committenza, \ne in particolare alle famiglie per le \nquali progetta, e al genius loci. Così ogni \noggetto può dialogare con alcuni elementi \ndell’ambientazione, con ingrandimenti \nfotografici, con una particolare vista \nprospettica di Torino, con una specifica \nparete attrezzata.
