I was always in my bedroom, drawing and \nmaking things. I guess I’m analogue by nature. As  \nan interior designer I need to see things through. \nWhen we moved in here 14 years ago, I wanted to  \nput my own stamp on it.\nWhen I curate spaces, it’s all about connections and \nlayers. My house, and any home is in constant shift. \nWe change, children change, spaces change, we need \nto adapt to that. So there’s always a project going  \non, everywhere. My home is a platform to test ideas.  \nI might see a colour somewhere, and I’ll keep it  \nin mind, and try and apply that to fabrics, paints, \nsamples, tiles, to a new project. It’s like making a  \nfruit salad, blending bitter and sweet. The pop of \nsomething unusual is what I’m after. There’s always \nthis constant: old and new, found and revived.  \nEither reupholstering something a few times  \nas needed over its lifespan or mixing it with new  \npieces. Everything has a story. About a year ago  \nwe managed to get an original plywood splint by  \nEames, which  we’d been after for years. It is in the \ndining room. People ask what it is, and then we \nexplain the background and how it ended up in our \nhouse. Or my mum’s Irish harp, which she played \nfrom the age of a child. I brought it back from Ireland. \nNo one in the house can play it but I just love all  \nthe memories it brings.’\nOriginally from Dublin, Irenie has established  \nher creative studio in London, where she lives with \nher family. So when I found this run-down \nhouse in London, it was a great opportunity. My  \nidea was to show what can be done on a traditional \nEdwardian building from 1907 to really lower the \nenergy consumption and make it comfortable and \nsustainable. I tried to follow passive house principles: \nsuper insulated airtight construction, triple glazing \nand mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.  \nFor the transformation I used natural materials like \ntimber and local stone rather than concrete and  \nsteel. Stone really helps to keep houses cool on a hot \nsummer day. This proves that sustainability can be  \nan opportunity rather than a constraint.\nAtmosphere is created with pure materials, with \ncarefully chosen finishes and daylight. A limited \nmaterial palette helps to create a calmer environment, \nand that extends to the furniture. Over time materials \ngain character through use, the accumulation of \nmarks and dents. Furniture made of natural materials \nhas a certain warmth to it.\nAt home I like things to be clean and minimal, like a \nZen space, a calm shelter to come back to after a busy \nday. When I see Astrid, my cat, welcoming me, I feel \nlike I’m home. That is what I’m after: walk through \nthe front door and feel relaxed. Minimalism is not an \nend in itself.
